FILM ON WEDNESDAY ON CASE WIWA V. SHELL
The film, Wiwa v. Shell, tells the story of Ken Saro-Wiwa of Nigeria and Shell oil's partnership with the Nigerian military government to violently suppress human rights protesters in the Niger Delta which ultimately resulted in Wiwa's death. The ensuing US case against Shell under the Alien Tort Claims Act is then discussed; Shell settled the case this past summer for $15.5 million. Those who attended the environmental law conference in Oregon last year will remember the keynote address by the founder of the organization behind this case, EarthRights International.
