The Vancouver Island Public Interest Research Group invites you to:

Out of Sight
Policing Poverty in Victoria, Coast & Straits Salish Territories
Community Forum & Research Publication Launch

A publication launch, panel and discussion featuring community members, street interviewers, researchers & students

Thursday, November 10th, 2011
Victoria Public Library Meeting Room, 735 Broughton Street
6:30 - 8:30

Everyone welcome - Wheelchair accessible - Light supper

How do policing and the criminal justice system touch the lives of people who are street-involved? Are there reports of racial and social profiling in Victoria? How is public space policed? What role do policing and the courts play in addressing poverty? What needs to change? And how can we do something about? Come bring your questions and ideas to an evening discussion with street interviewers, organizers and researchers from the "Out of Sight: Policing Poverty in Victoria" project.

About the research project
"Out of Sight: Policing Poverty" is a community research project that takes a close look at how policing and the criminal justice system intersect with the lives of street-involved people in Victoria, Coast and Straits Salish Territories. Through over 100 peer interviews, the project opens a space for the experiences and perspectives of street-involved people to take center-stage in our communities' efforts to build a better understanding of policing, criminal justice and poverty.

{UVic Poverty Law Club} ... Update

I promise this is the last time I'll spam your inboxes with meeting updates.

This week's meeting is actually THURSDAY still at 5:00, but now in room
159 (which is excessively large, but really, who doesn't love an intimate
gathering in a cavernous lecture hall?).

Sorry for the mix-up.

{UVic Poverty Law Club} Meeting this week!

Hi all!

Sorry I didn't have my act together this weekend to send this email out
sooner...

MEETING! Tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5:00 in room 152. Tell your friends! It's
going to be grrrreat!

Yours Truly,

Maddy

{UVic Poverty Law Club} CLA UVic

Hi Everyone!

This is Anna and Jessica from the Canadian Lawyers Abroad (CLA) UVic Chapter.

We are a student club at UVic Law and are hoping to collaborate with other
student clubs to host events centred around this year's CLA theme:
Indigenous Rights and Increasing Access to Justice for Canada's First
Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples.

The LSS has been kind enough to give us $150 and we are putting this
towards two themed events (one in each semester).

If anyone is interested, please send me an email and hopefully we can
arrange a time that works for everyone who is interested to discuss
possible events.

PS: CLA's website is www.cla-ace.ca.

Thank you!

Anna Beatch and Jessica Gagne
