{UVic Poverty Law Club} Fwd: Dec 8th, 7pm = War on Drugs is War on the Poor (info session & campaign launch)

++++++please distribute widely+++++++

Thursday December 8th  /  7-11pm  /  Cabin 12 (Pandora@Govt)
===============================================

On December 8th, Beddow Centre, S.O.L.I.D & Allies of Drug War Survivors will launch a campaign to challenge the War on Drugs as a critical component of the current War on the Poor.

===============================================

The "War on Drugs is a War on the Poor" campaign will demand:

> SUPERVISED CONSUMPTION SITES NOW! An end to denying essential services to people who use drugs (including the immediate implementation of peer-driven Supervised Consumption Services in Victoria)

> HOMES NOT PRISONS! No new money for the criminalization of people who use drugs (no new prisons; no increases to policing budgets for policing poverty) and spending where it should be --providing housing, income, health services and supports for all!

===============================================

The launch features presentations about upcoming projects including:

> plans for a 2012 convergence by and for people who use drugs, aimed at building and sharing organizing skills as the first step in creating a powerful, accessible and broad-based local campaign against the War on Drugs/War on the Poor.

Please join us to share knowledge about existing projects and allied organizations (Society of Living Illicit Drug Users, Beddow Centre), and to pool our resources to build a strong, focused anti-poverty movement in Victoria.

{UVic Poverty Law Club} Hope in Shadows Calendars for Sale next week!

Hi PLC,

Please stop by the table outside the lounge at lunchtime next week if you would like to be a Hope in Shadows calendar.    The calendar makes a great holiday gift.  They are selling at a discount rate for students for $15.

Hope in Shadows is a charitable organization that aims to create positive social change for people and communities impacted by poverty and marginalization. Our projects empower, educate, and provide employment training to low income people in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside and beyond.

The annual Hope in Shadows photography contest - coordinated by the Pivot Legal Society - which gives Downtown Eastside residents the opportunity to portray their community through their own eyes. A selection of the contest's best images is featured in the annual Hope in Shadows calendar which is sold on the streets of Vancouver by homeless and low-income vendors. Free training and support are provided to those interested in managing their own micro-business.

Thanks and please spread the word!
